Jaclyn Mottola
My paintings explore abstraction through the use of restrained color, simple shapes, and layered texture. My work and process are inspired by the world around me with a specific interest in material and surface. I draw inspiration from the tactile and visual elements of the places I travel, paying close attention to the beauty in subtle textures, shapes and colors.
My paintings use crisp lines and large blocks of color to create rigid compositions that assert structure. To counterbalance the bluntness, I experiment with using new and unexpected materials to create rich tactile surfaces that inject a tenderness into the work.
My additive process of painting is an intuitive search for balance and harmony. Subtle grooves, seams, and recessed shapes add to the complexity of the painting's surfaces, hinting at the trials and errors in layers below. This cyclical process of painting and repainting provides me with a lulling comfort that mirrors a larger aspiration for finding systems that create harmony in our lives.
